Editor's Note: A Week to Remember
This past week, my heart danced with both overwhelming joy and unforeseen challenges. It started like most ordinary Saturdays—calm, beautiful, and filled with plans. I was set to celebrate November birthdays with my beloved S.H.A.D.E.S. sisters at the Cheesecake Factory, excited for a rare indulgence in a treat I’d long avoided due to my shift toward a more alkaline diet. Yet, beneath the surface, I carried a heavy secret.
Just the day before, I had received news I wasn’t prepared for—a biopsy confirmed a cancer diagnosis I had prayed against. The weight of it threatened to crush my spirit, and I hadn’t shared it with anyone. When asked how I was doing, I masked my truth with a simple, "I’m okay." But fate had something unexpected in store for me that would momentarily shift my focus from my fears.
Around 9 a.m., my daughter called with news: her mucus plug had come out. With her two previous births as reference, I calculated we had a couple of days before labor progressed. Confident I had time, I headed off to my lunch date, laughter and joy filling the void left by yesterday’s heavy news.
Little did I know, the hours ahead would send my world into a whirlwind. By 5 p.m., my daughter’s water broke, and suddenly, everything accelerated. As we scrambled to time her contractions, give the children baths, and ready her for the hospital, I couldn’t help but remember her last labor when we almost delivered on the doorstep of Grady Hospital.
But this time was different. As the minutes ticked by and the contractions grew closer, I knew we were racing against time. With traffic pushing against me and my daughter in the shower of all places, my heart pounded like a drum. Would we make it in time?
Back at her home, I held the fort with my grandchildren, keeping them entertained and reassured that their baby brother would soon arrive. My eldest grandson, Prince, stood vigil at the window, peering into the night, calling for his baby brother. As the clock neared 10:15 p.m., a call came through—it was my son-in-law.
“The baby is here!”
The joy that erupted from that moment was indescribable. My family, my friends, my heart—everyone celebrated the arrival of Amir Encore McConico, the newest and last prince of our family. And on Monday, November 18th, we welcomed him home with music, instruments, and a song crafted just for him.
Though the journey to that moment didn’t go as planned—does birth ever?—the love, resilience, and faith that carried us through made it all the more magical. Amir’s arrival was a testament to life’s ability to weave beauty even in moments of uncertainty. And as I hold him now, I’m reminded that joy is never far, even when we least expect it.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the "silent killer" because it can sneak up on us without obvious symptoms. Common causes include stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, and yes—coffee. While a beloved pick-me-up, coffee can spike blood pressure, making it less than ideal if you’re managing hypertension. But don’t worry—there are delicious and healthful alternatives!
Here are 3 Drinks to help naturally lower blood pressure and promote overall health:
1. Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)
A powerful anti-inflammatory drink that helps reduce oxidative stress and improve circulation.
Ingredients:
1 cup of unsweetened almond or coconut milk
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
A pinch of black pepper (enhances turmeric absorption)
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of honey (optional)
How to Make:
Heat the milk in a small pot over medium heat.
Add turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon. Stir until combined.
Sweeten with honey if desired. Pour into a mug and enjoy warm.
How to Consume:
Drink 12 ounces per day, ideally in the evening, as it also promotes relaxation.
2. Hibiscus Tea
Known for its ability to reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure naturally.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons of dried hibiscus flowers (or 1 hibiscus tea bag)
1 cup of boiling water
Honey or lemon (optional)
How to Make:
Steep hibiscus flowers in boiling water for 5-7 minutes.
Strain or remove the tea bag, and sweeten lightly with honey or lemon if desired.
How to Consume:
Enjoy 1-2 cups daily, morning or afternoon, for best results.
3. Lemon Ginger Tea
A natural diuretic that helps widen blood vessels and improve circulation.
Ingredients:
1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
1 cup of boiling water
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Honey (optional)
How to Make:
Steep ginger slices in boiling water for 5 minutes.
Add lemon juice and sweeten with honey if desired.
How to Consume:
Drink 1 cup after meals, up to 2-3 cups per day.
