Volume 32- Celebrating Growth & Gratitude

December 4, 2024

Editor’s Note: Strength in the Midst of Sorrow

This Thanksgiving, I sat at a dinner table surrounded by friends and chosen family—people who have embraced me, flaws and all. It was a beautiful evening, yet bittersweet, as I stepped into a home filled with love, memories, and the weight of loss.

Two years ago, this same group celebrated Thanksgiving together in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. It was a time of joy and togetherness, made even more special because Jarno, Cherise’s beloved husband, was with us. But during that trip, our world turned upside down. Jarno passed away unexpectedly while out for his morning run. The news left us reeling, our hearts broken. That year, we gathered for Thanksgiving dinner again—but with one less guest, Jarno. It was one of the most difficult meals we’ve ever shared, filled with tears, silence, and an overwhelming sense of grief.

Last Thursday, I visited Cherise and Jarno’s home for the first time since his passing. For me, it was deeply emotional. Others had been able to visit and process their grief over time, but I had not. Having lost my own husband 31 years ago, I understood the depth of Cherise’s pain. It’s a kind of sorrow that doesn’t disappear—it softens but never truly goes away.

Despite this, Cherise was remarkable. Her home was beautiful, her table welcoming, and her spirit radiated grace. She was the consummate hostess, creating an evening filled with warmth and love. Yet when it came time to bless the table, she needed a quiet moment to herself. It was a poignant reminder of the journey she has been on, and of the strength it takes to carry grief while continuing to show up for life.

That evening, surrounded by people who love and support one another, I was reminded of the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Cherise’s ability to host with such grace, even while honoring her pain, was an act of courage that inspired us all.

Takeaway: This season, if you’re navigating loss, remember that grief and gratitude can coexist. It’s okay to feel the weight of your emotions while still embracing the joy of connection and the beauty of life. Give yourself permission to grieve, but also allow yourself to be lifted by the love of those around you.

Cherise’s journey shows us that true strength lies in the ability to honor what was lost while finding the courage to continue living fully. It’s a reminder that even in our hardest moments, love and resilience can guide us forward.

May this holiday season bring you peace, connection, and a renewed sense of gratitude.

With love and light,

Wellness Spotlight: A Natural Remedy for Cold and Flu Season

As cold and flu season approaches, it’s always good to have simple, natural remedies on hand. This two-ingredient remedy made from honey and red onions is not only easy to prepare but also incredibly effective at soothing a cough and relieving a sore throat.

Why It Works

  • Red Onions: Packed with quercetin and antioxidants, red onions help fight inflammation in the body, boost your immune system, and may even help clear mucus from your airways.

  • Honey: A natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory powerhouse, honey helps coat and soothe the throat while providing additional antioxidants to fight off illness.

Honey & Red Onion Syrup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 large red onion

  • 1/2 cup of raw honey (local if possible)

Steps

  1. Peel and slice the red onion into thin rings or slices.

  2. In a clean glass jar or bowl, layer the onion slices, alternating with spoonfuls of honey, until all the onion is covered and the jar is full.

  3. Cover the jar with a lid or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap.

  4. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 6–8 hours, or overnight, to allow the onion to release its natural juices and combine with the honey.

  5. After the mixture has infused, strain the syrup into a clean jar or container, discarding the onion slices.

Dosage

  • For adults: Take 1 tablespoon every 3–4 hours as needed to soothe your throat and suppress your cough.

  • For children over 1 year old: Take 1 teaspoon every 3–4 hours. (Note: Never give honey to infants under 1 year old.)

Storage

Store the syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

This simple remedy is not only effective but also gentle on the body, making it a go-to during the colder months. Let this natural powerhouse help you stay resilient and healthy as you embrace the season ahead!

Skill Builder: Mastering the Art of Setting Boundaries

This Week’s Skill: Mastering the Art of Setting Boundaries

Overview: Boundaries are not barriers—they’re bridges to healthier relationships, better time management, and personal growth. Learning to set and enforce boundaries protects your time and energy while honoring your emotional well-being. This week, we’re exploring three steps to help you master this essential skill for a more balanced and intentional life.

3 Steps to Master the Art of Setting Boundaries

1. Identify Your Needs: Clarity is Key

Boundaries start with understanding where you feel overextended or unprotected.

How to Start:

  • Reflect on areas in your life where you feel drained or overwhelmed.

  • Use your Live Out Loud Passion Journal to write down specific situations or relationships where boundaries may be missing.

Real-Life Example:
If you feel exhausted from constant after-hours work emails, identify the need for an “off-the-clock” boundary.

2. Communicate Clearly: Speak Your Truth with Kindness

Boundaries mean nothing if others don’t know they exist.

How to Start:

  • Use “I” statements to communicate your boundaries in a non-confrontational way. For example:

    • Instead of: “You’re always bothering me after work!”

    • Try: “I need to disconnect from work emails after 7 PM to recharge for the next day.”

Why It Works:
This approach helps others understand your needs without feeling attacked, creating room for respect and understanding.

3. Enforce with Consistency: No Means No

Boundaries are only as effective as your commitment to them.

How to Start:

  • Revisit your boundaries regularly to ensure they’re respected.

  • Practice saying no to requests that overstep your limits, even if it feels uncomfortable.

Real-Life Example:
If someone keeps asking for last-minute favors that disrupt your plans, stick to your boundary and politely decline: “I’d love to help, but I’ve already made other commitments.”
