Live Out Loud

Embracing a NEW Chapter (3 minute read)

Mechel Miller- Author

As I approach my 54th birthday, I can't help but reflect on the journey that has brought me here, to this moment of self-discovery. Life has granted me the gift of motherhood, and now, I revel in the precious role of being a grandmother to my two wonderful grandchildren. The world of corporate America, though a significant part of my past, no longer defines my worth or ambition. Instead, my passion now lies in supporting friends, colleagues, my niece and her children and helping others grow their businesses. This transition has been a profound one, marked by both joy and challenges.

Over the past decade, I've noticed a shifting landscape within myself. There's been an unwelcome companion, unwanted weight gain, and a decreased tolerance for noise. The contours of my life have altered, and I've embarked on a journey to regain control, embracing health and well-being.

Yet, amidst this transformation, there are moments when I feel a sense of solitude creeping in. It's a common thread woven into the fabric of many lives, particularly during transformative stages like the one I find myself in.

Loneliness is a Universal Experience

It's important to remember that feeling alone is a universal experience, and it doesn't discriminate by age, gender, or background. Loneliness can occur at any point in life, and acknowledging it is the first step towards healing.

Resources for Connection and Support

If you, like me, find yourself in need of connection and support, there are various resources available:

  1. Community Groups: Explore local or online community groups, which can offer a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Whether it's a book club, a fitness class, or a hobby group, connecting with others who share your interests can be immensely fulfilling.

  2. Volunteer Opportunities: Giving your time to causes you're passionate about not only helps others but also fosters a sense of purpose and connection.

  3. Professional Networking: Continue supporting others in their business ventures and expand your professional network. It's a great way to stay engaged, share your valuable experiences, and create meaningful connections.

  4. Therapy and Counseling: Speaking with a therapist or counselor can provide a safe space to address feelings of loneliness and find strategies to manage them.

  5. Online Forums and Social Media: Joining online communities, forums, or social media groups centered around your interests can be a source of virtual companionship.

  6. Fitness and Wellness Programs: Staying fit and eating right are not only essential for physical health but also mental well-being. Consider joining fitness or wellness programs in your area to meet like-minded individuals.

Balanced Brew- A Voice of Empowerment: Joining Forces for Breast Cancer Awareness

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending an eye-opening breast cancer awareness meeting, and it was an experience that left a profound impact on my heart. The event was hosted by the remarkable co-founder of "My Style Matters, Inc," Tiah Tomlin, right in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. Her eloquent and purposeful words resonated deeply with the mothers and staff members at Norma's Academy of Dance in Fairburn, GA, as she shared her powerful story.

Tiah's journey is one of strength and resilience, one that touched the lives of everyone present. She was diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 40, and during her quest for help and support, she discovered a significant gap in resources for women of color facing this daunting challenge. Her determination to bridge this gap and bring about change is truly inspirational.

As I looked around the room, I saw faces like mine, women who, like me, had been apprehensive about the idea of mammograms or self-breast exams. Tiah's insights and the wealth of information she presented were nothing short of transformative. The event covered an array of crucial topics, from safe, healthy eating to the importance of safe beauty products. Tiah's dedication to educating and empowering women like us is a beacon of hope and knowledge.

Resources for Your Breast Health Journey

For those seeking support, knowledge, and resources to navigate the path to breast health, here are some valuable sources:

  1. My Style Matters, Inc - Founded by Tiah Tomlin, this organization is dedicated to providing support and resources for women of color facing breast cancer. Their programs and events aim to bridge the gap and empower those in need.

  2. American Cancer Society - A comprehensive resource for breast cancer information, they offer guidance on early detection, treatment options, and support for patients and their families.

  3. Breast Cancer Support Groups - Local and online support groups provide a sense of community and a safe space to share experiences and knowledge.

  4. Breast Self-Exam Guides - Resources and step-by-step guides are available to help women perform self-breast exams confidently.

  5. Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Resources - Educate yourself about the impact of diet and lifestyle choices on breast health. Consider consulting with a nutritionist for personalized guidance.

  6. Safe Beauty Product Resources - Explore resources that help you make informed choices about beauty products free from harmful chemicals.

The time spent at this meeting was an investment in our well-being, an opportunity to become informed and proactive in our approach to breast health. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Tiah for her unwavering commitment to raising awareness, supporting women of color, and guiding us towards a future where breast cancer can be detected early and treated effectively.

It is events like these that remind us of the power of community, support, and shared knowledge. I am honored to be part of such a compassionate and empowering community in "Live Out Loud." Let's continue to uplift each other, educate ourselves, and advocate for our health. Together, we can conquer the challenges life throws our way.
