**FEATURED STORY**

Editor’s Note: The Call You Can’t Ignore: A Lesson in Listening, Healing, and Prosperity

Greetings, Live Out Loud family!

This past Sunday, as I was preparing for worship, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number. My instinct? Ignore and block. And I did.

Moments later, another call came through—this time from a number I recognized, yet something felt off. The voice on the other end did not sound like the person I knew. Again, I hesitated. Ignored it. I assumed it was a distraction, maybe even an attempt to keep me from going to church.

But then, the call came again.

Frustrated, I answered, hoping my irritation would deter whoever was on the line. But instead of annoyance, what I heard stopped me in my tracks.

"Mechel, don’t hang up. It’s me."

The voice was small, broken, unfamiliar despite belonging to someone I had once known well. A friend I hadn’t spoken to in nearly two years. A friend who had gone silent after experiencing an unimaginable loss.

And now, he needed me.

The Story He Needed to Share

Through tears and strained breaths, he told me about the horrific tragedy that had shattered his world—the day his wife took her own life in his arms.

They had been married for 34 years, together for 50. But four years prior, their lives were forever altered when they lost their eldest son in a motorcycle accident—just twenty minutes after meeting with him to discuss transferring their family business to him.

That loss devastated them both, but for his wife, the grief was unbearable. She spiraled into deep depression, withdrawing from life, from him, from herself.

Despite their separation, he still cared for her, ultimately moving her back home so he could keep a closer watch. But even then, he was drowning in his own grief, using work as a coping mechanism to avoid the pain.

Then came the day—the day she needed him to listen. She told him she had something important to say—something not good. But he was on a deadline. He promised they could talk later.

She pressed. Begged.

And then, she said it:

"If you leave, I’ll kill myself."

He had heard it before. And surely, she didn’t mean it. Not with her grandchildren in the next room. Not after they had just talked about fully reconciling.

So he kissed her goodbye and walked to his car.

Then—a gunshot.

Rushing back into the house, calling her name, but hearing nothing, he found her slumped over, lifeless.

For the next four months, he was a shell of himself. He sat in the same chair, day after day, staring at the spot where he had held her, his hands covered in her blood. He turned to alcohol and smoking to numb the pain. Authorities put him on suicide watch, and his family took shifts watching him 24/7, afraid he wouldn’t make it through the night.

He prayed. But felt nothing.

Then, out of nowhere, he felt an urge to reach out.

He had no way of contacting me, but he remembered that a mutual friend had my number.

That’s how he found me.

That’s how I almost missed his call.

When God Speaks, You Have to Be Ready to Listen

When I answered that phone, I didn’t realize I was someone’s lifeline.

He poured out his grief, his regret, his pain, and all I could do was listen.

The next day, he called again. But this time, his voice was different—lighter, stronger, more hopeful. He told me:

"For the first time in months, I feel like I can start again."

And that same day, he began cleaning his home, removing painful reminders, taking steps—small, but real—toward healing.

It reminded me of a powerful lesson from Catherine Ponder’s The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity, Chapter 17, which teaches that our healing begins in the mind. When we hold onto pain, when we internalize grief, when we allow negative thoughts to fester, it manifests physically, mentally, and emotionally. But when we shift our mindset, when we speak healing and prosperity over our lives, everything changes.

My friend had been trapped in his grief, believing that he would never heal, never move forward, never experience joy again. That belief became his reality.

Until something shifted.

Until he heard God’s voice telling him to reach out.

Until I answered.

Are You Listening to the Call?

How many times do we ignore the voice of God—whether it’s through a gut feeling, an unexpected encounter, or a persistent thought that won’t leave us alone?

How often do we say:
"I’ll check on them later,"
"They’ll be fine,"
"I have too much going on right now,"
"Someone else will handle it"

only to find out that later never comes?

This experience reminded me that sometimes, the call you’re avoiding is the one you’re meant to answer.

God places people on our hearts for a reason. The nudges, the names that come to mind, the people you haven’t heard from in a while—they are not coincidences.
