Note From the Author

A Sister's Strength: Advocating Through Adversity

I have a dear siSTAR friend who suffered a stroke unexpectedly last week. Despite being a citizen, she is not originally from this country and found it incredibly challenging to navigate the complexities of the American medical system. Desperately needing care, she faced barriers that left her feeling helpless. I stepped in to advocate for her, ensuring she received the services she needed. However, the moment I was out of sight, the staff reverted to giving her suboptimal treatment, which infuriated and embarrassed me due to the clear discrimination stemming from the language barrier.

Throughout the week, I made it a point to visit her daily, ensuring she received proper care during her hospital stay. I also took on the responsibility of caring for her children. Upon her release, I coordinated and attended her doctor’s appointments, ensuring she received continuous and proper treatment. I stood by her side, reassuring her that she had gained a newly adopted sister who would not let her face this battle alone. She was understandably terrified, having lost full functionality of the left side of her body.

In addition to her medical needs, I helped keep her landlord at bay to prevent her eviction, as she was behind on rent payments. I also assisted her in tapping into her life insurance policy's living benefits to provide financial relief. This experience highlighted the critical importance of having our affairs in order. My friend did not have a health directive or a power of attorney in place, which could have made her situation much worse had she been unable to communicate with me.

During this challenging period, we shed many tears but also formulated a concrete plan for her recovery. To bolster her spirits, I shared my own journey of overcoming meningitis, which had left me immobile and dependent on others for even the smallest tasks. Drawing from my experience, I assured her that despite the current bleakness, she would regain her strength and make a full recovery.

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, leaving us questioning, "Why me?" However, it's more empowering to ask, "Why not me?" and consider who else might benefit from our journey. Every trial and tribulation we face equips us with the strength and wisdom to support others in similar situations. I am deeply grateful for my experiences, as they have empowered me to be the best siSTAR I can be for others.
